DNA
Geny určují chemický kód pokynů,které řídí tělesné funkce i způsob vnímání rostlin i živočichů."Kopie" těchto pokynů se přenášejí z rodičů na potomky.Výzkum těchto procesů tvoří významnou oblast vědy,nazývanou molekulární biologie.Zabývá se strukturou molekul,ze kterých jsou vystavěna těla živočichů a rostlin.
Na začátku 20.stoleůtí vědci zjistili,že rostlinné a živočišné buňky obsahují chemickou látku zvanou deoxyribenukleová kyselina (DNA).Kolem roku 1950 se domnívali,že molekuly DNA fungují jako chemický kód pokynů zodpovědných za dědičkost,ale nevěděli,jak vypadají ani jak fungují.Řada vědců využila k vyřešení tohoto problému různých postupů.
Vytváření modelu DNA
Francis Crick byl vychován v londýně.Na londýnské universitě vystudoval fyziku a
na cambridgské universitě biologii.Spolu s americkým vědcem Jamesem Watsonem(narozen 1928) provedl výzkum struktury DNA.Ke svému bádání také využil výsledky práce jiných vědců,zejména Maurice Wilkinse(nar.1916) a Rosalindy Franklinové.W.a F. zkoumali DNA pomocí rentgenových snímků.Jejich dílo mělo zásadní význam pro konečný popis struktury DNA a pro vysvětlení přenosu genetické informace z jedné generace na druhou.
V r.1953 CRICK a WATSON sestavili z kousků drátů a umělohmothných kuliček stuňovitý model DNA.Měl tvar dvojité spirály,která vypadala jako zkroucený provazový žebřík.Model znázorňoval způsob,jakým se molekula DNA dělí na 2 stejné kopie sebe sama.
Když se rostliny a živočichové regenerují,každá buňka jeich těla se rozdělí na 2 kopie.Kdykoliv se tvoří nová buňka,kopíruje se i DNA,ve chvíli,kdy se buňka rozdělí mají obě nové buňkdy svou kopii pokynů zodpovědných za dědičnost.Tímto způsobem se přenášejí charakteristické rysy z rodičů na potomky.
Mnozí vědci považují tento objev za jeden z nejvýznamnějších poznatků 20.století.CRICK a WATSON a WILKINS získali v r.1962 Nobelovu cenu za lékařství.Nebýt toho,že Rosalinda Franklinová předčasně zemřela na rakovinu sdílela by tuto významnou enu s nimi.
